The Pole Man, also known as Nat King Pole and NKP is a Montreal based Drag King who performs in local venues. Most Drag Kings are lesbian women though not all. NKP is a most extraordinarily talented performer with a voice to blow you away, a sense of humor that will make anyone want to pee and bust a gut. For this painting, NKP is sporting one of her costumes, yes that is a lump in her jeans ( packing ). Also, notice the shadow behind NKP, it’s taken on the shape of her persona. On the wall, above her head is a poster advertising one of her shows.
In this painting, I look at the iconic persona of the Drag King, and seek to give context with the energy and humor, the strength and humanity she finds inherent in this performance art. I delve into the construction of identity, of gender and the often seen taboo of crossing that construct.
